The advancement of medicine depends on clinical trials to test the efficacy of new drugs and treatments. Billions of dollars are spent on clinical trials each year, and a sizeable proportion of those dollars is spent on finding persons who are eligible to participate in them. These efforts have their flaws, however. A recent survey by Leo Shapiro & Associates, a Chicago-based health-care research firm, indicates that the pool of willing candidates for clinical trials is potentially much larger than the current pool of candidates. The study also suggests that reaching this untapped population more effectively could save drug companies both time and money in the expensive clinical-trail portion of the drug and treatment development process. | |
