
Philip Johnson
Philip Johnson is CEO of LJS. Since joining the firm in 1971, he has designed and administered a wide range of studies measuring consumer behavior and opinion. Phil is an expert and innovative methodologist and has applied this skill to the development of unique tools to measure a brand’s competitive reputation and market share.
Phil is also an expert in the use of survey research as a tool in litigation. He has offered survey-based expert opinion in Federal and State courts, as well as in forums such as the Federal Trade Commission, The Food and Drug Administration, the Patent and Trademark Office, and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Phil is a member of the International Trademark Association and the American Association for Public Opinion Research.
Phil has an M.B.A from the University of Chicago and a B.S. in Psychology from Loyola University.
Matthew Smith
Matthew Smith is the President of LJS and has played a vital role in the firm’s success since joining the company in 1977.
Matthew is a specialist in brand development, product positioning and communications research. He led the refinement and expansion of the company’s data collection and qualitative research division and was instrumental in developing the AmeriTest® diagnostic system for advertising and marketing communications. Possessing extensive experience conducting global research, he also leads our international research teams.
Matthew has a B.A. in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Owen Shapiro
Owen Shapiro began his career at LJS in 1984. Owen has a unique ability to spot and evaluate new trends and start-up businesses, a skill that he applies to conducting due diligence research on behalf of the venture capital community. Owen also specializes in brand development and positioning research, and behavior and attitude research for the retail industry.
Owen is a regular guest lecturer at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago on survey research methods and market research. In addition to his work at LJS, he has completed original work on survey research methods at the National Opinion Research Center, a social science research institute that is affiliated with the University of Chicago.
Owen holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, with a concentration in Behavioral Sciences, and an M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, where he received advanced training in survey research methods and statistical analysis. He also holds a B.A. in Political Science from Reed College.
Margaret Mueller
Margaret Mueller is Research Director of the Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Group at LJS.
Throughout her professional career, Margaret has designed and supervised both qualitative and quantitative studies for clients across multiple industries to understand physician and consumer motivations and behaviors, employing a wide range of research techniques.
Margaret received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. in Social Science from the University of Chicago, and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
